Hunter Mah
Co-Founder, Director, Classical Guitarist
Winner of the 1st Prize at the 2008 Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Competition, Singaporean
classical guitarist Hunter Mah has performed on stages across Asia, the U.S.A., and
Europe.
As a young boy, Hunter was a multiple prize-winner in the Philippines’ annual National Music
Competition for Young Artists. He gave a debut solo recital at the Cultural Centre of the
Philippines at the age of 12, and by 14 was already a seasoned public performer, making
numerous appearances on stage, radio, and television.
Hunter received technical grounding from Singapore-based American guitarist-composer
Robert Luse, and studied harmony with composer and Singapore Cultural Medallion
recipient Phoon Yew Tien, before attending leading conservatories in the U.S.A. and the
Netherlands.
Pursuing undergraduate studies at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Hunter
ultimately attained the post-graduate Professional Studies Diploma where his primary
mentors were acclaimed composer, improviser, and theorist Dusan Bogdanovic, and
renowned performer and educator David Tanenbaum.
Completing his formal studies with a Masters degree cum laude from Conservatorium
Maastricht (Netherlands) under the guidance of preeminent guitarist Carlo Marchione, Hunter
received the highest grade awarded in his year.
A dedicated pedagogue, Hunter is currently Guitar Principal Studies Lecturer at the Nanyang
Academy of Fine Arts (University of the Arts Singapore). He has given masterclasses for the
Princess Galyani Vadhana Institute of Music (Thailand), and has frequently served as
Adjudicator at the Singapore Youth Festival.
Hunter’s private studio is sought after by learners and experts alike, from young children to
professional guitarists. With a teaching philosophy centred in cultivating a personal musical
practice that fosters self-empowerment and growth, Hunter’s students have also included
individuals who presented unique personal or physical challenges.
